Well, this would be alot like solatary confinment in prision. What would make a person acepting of it? Does he have hobbies he could resume? Does he read? Could he be put in a different prison where there was a better social life? What was his recent crime that incarserated him? Is it possible that some other solution could midigate his infraction? Maybe your mother just didn't want to take care of him anymore. Maybe someone else could. Maybe you.

Get him seen by a geriatric psychiatrist who can give you good advice on medication and behavior management. Yes, it's heartbreaking when there is a choice betwen keeoing him happy and keeping him safe.

Medicate his anxiety. When he starts with the tears, that is a tantrum. You both leave when bad behavior appears. You have to, or it just gets worse. Been there. Done that.
