One thing I have done from time to time is take photos of items that are special to me. I am creating an album of my favorite things. I write a paragraph of why an item is important along with a basic history of where and when I got it. This way, as I get rid of things I still have the photos as reminders. The album is also for my family to have so as they are going through whatever we have left, they will have info to help them decide if it has value to them... sentimentally or financially.

You could always put some of the excess stuff in storage. You will probably find that after a few months that you don't even miss the stuff in storage, and it may get easier at that time to let it go.

I am in my fifties and I am already purging a lot of the collectibles and books that I just had to have in my 20's. Garage sales and eBay are my friends. I will admit, my CD collection will be the toughest to let go. Maybe I will just let my son deal with that :)

Dear Emily86,
Be compassionate towards yourself for dealing with big loss. Kudos to you for moving into ALS, that's what I plan to do also someday if I'm still around. Loss is just plain hard in life. Belly breathe, let yourself grieve and in time things shift.
Best Wishes.

Try to keep 3 things of the stuff you feel is important (ie dishes, bedding, books, etc) then donate or sell the stuff you can do without .

You may realize you won't miss what you don't have anymore.

Good luck!!

I was in rehab from a stroke when my family moved me. I do have a storage unit. That helps. I am missing several things, like my wedding rings. I am downsizing slowly. I gave some things to grandchildren. That helped. Other than that, just try to tell yourself you're saving your children a lot of work.

Good luck and God bless.
