My parents have nightly help from 8pm to 8am, 6 nights per week. Sure, he's paid well, but I should still tip him for the holiday, right? How much? My dad has Parkinson's and dementia. He is so kind to my difficult parents and has taken my dad to many appointments. I also want to know what to tip the one night per week caregiver we have, who is our main caregivers sister. We live in Chicago so life ain't cheap here.

peanuttyxx: Use your judgement, i.e. as these caregivers are valuable to you, tip on the high end.

If or when you want to tip someone just do it!!! I am from France and we always tip, sometimes too much!!!!
When you are getting old!!! there is always something you can give from all the thinks you collect during your life???

Private pay vs agency employee will make a big difference regarding " tip". Most agencies have policies that prevent staff from accepting gifts/ tips .

Follow your heart. Or, if you're inclined toward an objective financial decision making route, maybe consider as you would a tip in a restaurant, 15-20 percent of total bill minimum....so that could mean that you look at the annual salary payout and tip 15 per cent of that for holiday bonus. Two thoughts to consider.

I wanna work for you.
My math may be off, never has been a strong suit for me, but if this person is making $25.00 per hour for a 12 hour shift and about 25 days a month that comes to about $90,000 per year and your 15% bonus would be a hefty $13,500. And if "peanuttyxx" is in the city of Chicago and or a surrounding suburb she may be paying more than $25.00 per hour.

I was getting ready to ask the same question. I use a service for two hours a day, $400 per week. I have no idea how much of that goes to the aid. Would a $400 year end bonus directly to the aid be appropriate or should I contact the service?

It depends on if the Aide is from an Agency or is private paid. If from an agency, then you need to find out what the agencies rules are. If private, I agree with Barb. One weeks pay for the night guy and one nights pay for the other one. People who are shown appreciation will do a better job.

That is spot on. Showing appreciation is extremely important. It is such important work but goes unrecognized. And the only way to show appreciation in the USA is giving cash.

I am giving our caregiver 24 hours of paid time off. Should I also be giving her a monetary gift? I did get her a small personal gift.

That sounds extremely nice to me.

I generally have given the cost of what I pay the person each time--so a week's salary for a full tile caregiver or nanny, a day's pay for a housecleaner who comes once a week, the price of one service for a stylist and so on.

This should come out of your parent's funds.

And I would say, for a caregiver, ONLY at Christmas. This shouldn't be a habit. They are taught not to accept tips.

Give whatever you feel is appropriate and what you can afford. I am sure that they don’t expect a huge amount. Whatever you give them will be appreciated.

I think a gift card to Wholefoods or a Local restaurant is a good idea - Like $300 - $350 . Another gift card for the other caregiver $150 .
