My husband will be in assisted living and dementia care in a couple of months. I will be paying out of our income (sadly just about all of it). What do I do to get some sort of rebate?

Ann, your best bet is to ask an Accountant or CPA if any of the cost can be tax deductible. Seems like every year there are new tax deduction laws. Let's hope it is in our favor this year.

Or you can call the IRS hotline and ask that question.

Definitely get a professional to do the taxes and get the maximum deduction. Keep copies of the determination and bills.

It is very likely that you'll be able to deduct at least a portion of the amount paid for your husbands AL. However, it can largely depend on what his care level is and what type of services he is receiving. With it being such an individualzed thing have an accountant who is familiar with eldercare tax laws help you prepare your taxes.
