It appears he in not adequately taking care of his sick wife? My friend's mother had a stroke last year and has been bed-ridden for over a year (basically inbetween a minimally conscious state and a vegetative state). Her husband has POA and has decided to take care of her in his home without help from healthcare aides and refuses to listen to advice from family members or get help. Since he is not equipped to properly take care of her, she is being neglected and suffering from infections, etc. What are the first steps to take to start trying to remove POA from him so that her other family members can get her the care she needs? From what I am reading, this is extremely difficult to do. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Poor husband, he's probably trying to do his best, and probably is so overwhelmed. Could be the couple had promised each other to take of each other, thus refusing outside help and nursing homes. And husband is abiding by that promise, even thought it is no longer in his wife's best interest.

The family needs to go into the home, not say one thing that husband's wife needs outside help.... but say they are there to do the laundry, do some light housekeeping, cook a meal. Don't go in asking.... go in doing. By asking, he will automatically say no. Ask him how is he doing. Ask him if he has any questions. Hopefully he will start to open up, and then the family can slowly bring in nursing Aides, etc.

I believe that asking for guardianship is the next step. This can be a long, expensive process that will likely require the assistance of an attorney.

File the petition for guardianship at the county courthouse. They will evaluate the situation and probably recommend placement for one or both.
