She has fallen 4 times recently and was hospitalized. I have tried Melatonin and Sleep3 and they did not work. She has sundowners and gets very confused at night. Does anyone know of anything that will help her sleep without basically knocking her out? I think I read a post where a woman gave her Mother baby cough syrup and it worked...I couldn't find the post.
Thank you!

Talk to her doctor. My mom took Seroquel for sundowners, started at 12.5 mg once daily at 4 pm. Increased gradually to 75 mg still once daily over three years. It is trial and error to find something that will work for your mom, so patience is necessary.

Turkey for dinner.  It contains Tryptophan, which induces sleep.

And eliminate any foods high in sugar, if she's eating them now.

Put a CD of soft music on when she goes to bed.  Something repetitive, like waves lapping on shore, is also soothing.

Since everyone is different, see a good Dr that has empathy for those elders that can't sleep. So many just dismiss insomnia. I should know as I also suffer from Insomnia. It affects many of all ages. Having tried all the mild forms of sleep meds, and melatonin ( which did not help) I find clonazepam is the only thing that helps me get any sleep. Now it is a controlled drug, so depends on her health if the Dr will prescribe it. Does not knock me out, and I still have times I can't sleep well, but without it I do not sleep at all. Good luck, insomnia is just horrible.
