I live in CT, my mother (has alzheimers) in Upstate NY in her own home. My brother is currently taking care of her, but its getting to the point where its going to be beyond his capability to care for her. Thinking of moving her to an assisted living facility in CT. Looking for advice on this process, moving from one state to another?

We moved my mom from Independent Living in NYS to AL and then NH in CT.

Make sure your POAs and other legal docs will cross state lines. We found, in general, that CT facilities were less expensive because they were less stringently regulated than those in NY.

Consider tax implications including probate. Our lawyer was in NYS; we needed to engage a lawyer admitted in CT to probate the will (a minor expense, just unexpected). Needed to transport the body from NH in CT to Funeral Home in NY.

If you found a suitable place for her, I say Go For It!

It’s a win/win all around. You don’t have to be worried about her or your brother.

You know she will be cared for properly.

You and your brother can visit as her children, without having the burden of being her caregivers.

I strongly encourage you to follow through with this excellent plan.

Best wishes to you and your family.
