Illness started with pancreatitis, went to liver and kidney failure. He has had multiple really bad infections. In January he was well enough to visit on the phone with our kids and his friends. Then he got another really bad infection. He aspirated and coded on February 2nd. He went back to UAMS early March. He has not really come back to himself since January. He has had several other infections since then also. The problem is that the hospital is trying to move him out to a nursing home. Hospital says he's running out of medicare days. If he goes to a nursing home he's on a limited amount of days. He has saved money over the years so he could leave some money for the kids. He owns a car. That is all he has, but I think he will lose it all. I need help helping my kids navigate through this.

He sounds pretty close to being on Hospice. He has to go to a nursing home or a hospice facility. Forget money for the kids, focus on getting him good care for the brief time he has left. Take things one step at a time.

There is never any assurance of an inheritance. He will need that money and will need medicaid. He can go to a NH and at sometime return to the hospital, and medicaid pays again.

Who is his Power of Attorney?

Don't think of it as losing it all. He deserves every cent to be spent on his care.

We just keep thinking he could get better. He has gotten better several times, but always gets knocked back out by an infection. Is there ANY way to get him in-home care. He is not on a vent, too (trach collar).

He really wanted for his kids to have something. He has another child besides what we have together. There is no Power of Attorney. When he was lucid we were all of the opinion he was getting better and didn't address it. Now, well....

Medicaid will not provide 24/7 in home care. At that point the patient goes to a nursing home. No he will not get better at this point. Once the organs start shutting down, you are on a very short timeline. If he is non lucid, organs shutting down, wears a trach, recurring infections, he is out of time.
Find the Will so the kids can start fighting over it.

My goodness Pam, that was a crass response. His liver numbers are almost normal now. His kidneys have started to work again. He has only had dialysis once in the past two weeks. Yes he is on a trach vent because he got pneumonia in both lungs at the LTAC.

1st things first. Someone needs to be POA, or no one is going to be able to get medical information and make decisions for him. Is anyone on his bank accounts, if he is unable to write checks? He needs a POA for that, too.

My husband is his mom's POA. My nephew is my mom's POA. It is a couple of months of solid headache at first. They have to work with hospital billing, insurance, medicare, it sounds like medicaid in your case and any utilities he has in his name.

Who is stepping up to care for him at home? It is a 24/7 job. And no one gets paid.

I have found, with both my mother and MIL living, that not all structured care is bad. Most is good and it is a lot easier to keep the patient in the facility, than it is to move them around.

I suppose the hospital has had him sign a living will and the do not resuscitate form. It was good for me to know my mother's wishes, when she had her recent stroke.

Good luck.
