I haven't reached this point yet but mom is rapidly losing the ability to stand and transfer. I'm really not certain I can handle changing her if she becomes totally unable to get to the bathroom, the few times I've done it we end up with a mess everywhere. Those disposable chucks are not nearly large enough, especially if things are runny. And to actually get her clean would take a lot of wipes.
How do you do it?

cwillie, you'll get the hang of it. It's all in the rolling, as in your mom rolling from side to side. And make sure you're using diapers with the tabs on the side, not the ones that go on like underpants. Have all of your supplies at the bedside: a fresh diaper, another chucks pad, wipes, and a trash can to pitch it all into. You might want to double glove one hand in the beginning in case you get any mess on you. Then you just have to take off the glove and you'll still be good to go.

The YouTube videos are very easy and not very realistic since they're using a weightless dummy. A human is more challenging. Does the bed have rails? You'll need rails for your mom to grasp as she rolls from side to side. And don't worry about keeping the chucks clean; you have another one right there to use when you're done. Use the one she already has under her to mop things up. And if it's a large BM roll up the diaper while your mom is on her side, roll it up so the soiled part is in the inside so your mom will be laying against the bundle of rolled up diaper. This will assist you in keeping her on her side somewhat and will help keep the mess to a minimum.

So the soiled diaper is rolled up (dirty part in the inside) and against the small of your mom's back. Clean her skin with wipes and throw them out in the trash can you've put right at the bedside. If there is more stool to clean either use more wipes or just wipe your mom down with the chucks she's been laying on and then roll the chucks up. Once everything is all clean and ready have your mom roll over the bump and you go to the other side of the bed (if you get proficient you can do this from one side of the bed without having to run around from side to side). Slide the soiled, rolled up diaper and chucks out from under her but have another chucks ready to go!! You can place it underneath the rolled up diaper and soiled chucks so it'll be in place for your to unroll it from the other side. Always protect the linens. The chucks you can throw away, if the linens get soiled you're looking at a whole bed change.

When sliding a diaper onto your mom have her roll to one side again. Slide the diaper beneath her and kinda smoosh it under her so you can grab the other side without having to go in search of it, plus if you're yanking at it it'll tear so you don't want to do that. Pull the diaper out from the other side, have your mom lift her hips if necessary so you can fit it on her then attach it using the tabs.

Once you get used to it you won't have a mess to clean up and a diaper change will be lickety split. You just need some practice. Again, it's all in the rolling. Eventually you'll be able to do a diaper change without your mom having to roll back and forth a number of times. You'll be able to line up the clean chucks and a fresh diaper all at one to slide under her.

The reason you always keep a chucks under her is because she can urinate or have a BM at any time and you want to protect the linens. There's nothing worse than dealing with a soiled diaper and clean up only to get more stool on the bed sheet.

I hope this made sense.

Ive only had to do this twice when Mum was poorly and it sure is easier with two people.

Eyerish has given you one of the best explanations I have seen.

It was rolling her far enough to get her to stay put that I found difficult but with practice (on the same run I might add- it took me ages but by the time I had finished I knew what to do next time!) if you raise and bend one knee and then roll them until the knee is touching the bed than you will have rolled them far enough to push the protective sheet tight up against them and far enough that when you roll them back you have the bed covered. Do this for the diaper too.

The art for me was in the preparation and I went for disposable dry wipes or something I found better second time round but required sanitising are the muslins we used to use in baby's diapers before disposable ones came along, and good old fashioned soap and 2 bowls of hot water. That way I had the ability to rinse using clean water so I kept several cloths for washing and one for rinsing. I have an trolley that I put in place over the end of the bed which made life a whole lot easier. Several towels (just in case). The one thing you mustn't forget is a bin liner or large plastic bag. nothing worse than getting to the disposal point and realising you have nothing to dispose into!

If it is very runny use toilet tissue to wipe away the poop as much as you can then go for the wash but don't forget this type of poop is acidic to the perineal area and I would make sure I used a barrier cream to protect their skin - the last thing you want is a sort of dermatitis and subsequent infection down there.

Go to youtube and search "changing adult diaper" there will be several helpful videos. Don't forget you'll need vinyl gloves too.

You mean those helpful videos with the mannequin?
I understand the basics of what I am supposed to do, but I must be a klutz because this just doesn't seem workable to me.
I suppose practice makes perfect ;(
